Brussels Airport welcomed almost 4.6 million passengers in July and August, an increase of 5 per cent compared to the same period last year, the company announced. In addition, a 10th long-haul aircraft will join the Brussels Airlines fleet next summer, connecting Brussels with the Kenyan capital, Nairobi.
In August alone, 2,260,496 passengers travelled via Brussels Airport. The 10 most popular destinations were Spain, Turkey, Greece, Germany, Italy, Morocco, Portugal, France, the US and the UK.
The amount of freight transported decreased slightly in August by 1 per cent to 49,189 tonnes. The total number of flight movements at Brussels Airport increased by 1 per cent in August 2023 compared to 2022. The number of passenger flights increased by 3 per cent.
Connection to Nairobi
Meanwhile, an Airbus A330 will add the Kenyan capital Nairobi to Brussels Airlines' network in June, after a nine-year absence. Flights will operate six times a week during the summer and four times a week during the winter.
According to Brussels Airlines CEO Dorothea von Boxberg, the addition is "a clear sign of confidence from the Lufthansa Group and also strengthens our position as the hub to Africa within the Group". Brussels Airlines, Belgium's largest airline, is part of the German Lufthansa Group.
