Telecoms operator Digi Belgium has signed an agreement with Proximus giving it access to the latter's mobile network for five years. The companies announced this in a press release on Monday.
Digi Belgium is a joint venture between Belgium's Citymesh and Romania's Digi. It aims to become the fourth major telecoms operator on the Belgian consumer market alongside Proximus, Telenet and Orange.
Proximus will also offer some 400 of its mobile sites, which have been taken out of service as a result of the ongoing consolidation of the mobile sector, to InSky, the company responsible for the deployment of the Digi and Citymesh infrastructure.

"We are on track," says Ward Van Ooteghem, chief strategy officer of the Citymesh Group. "In 2022, together with RCS&RDS [Digi Communications], we acquired the package for the new Belgian telecoms player. The creation of a nationwide Digi network will take several years, but this agreement allows us to combine the good coverage of Proximus with the deployment of our own Digi network. This will allow us to enter the market as early as 2024 with a full mobile offering for consumers and businesses."
Mitch De Geest, CEO of Citymesh Group, describes the agreement as "a crucial step in our master plan". "The goal remains to break the status quo in Belgium and show that a high quality and fair offer is also possible here," he said. "We will announce the concrete plans very soon".
