The first final permits for dynamic 5G antennas in Brussels have been issued, reports the environmental administration of the Brussels-Capital Region. The permits have been issued for the King Baudouin stadium and for several sites in Koekelberg and Berchem-Sainte-Agathe.
In mid-July, De Tijd reported that 5G would be coming to Brussels in September. 5G is the fifth generation of the mobile telecommunications network which makes it possible to surf, whatsapp, stream music and films even faster than on the 4G network.
The dynamic 5G antenna does not transmit waves of the same power and in the same direction all the time, but adjusts the waves according to demand.
The deployment of 5G is subject to strict regulations and the Brussels-Capital Region has a very strict standard. Antennas are only allowed to emit 9.19 volts per metre indoors and 14.57 volts per metre outdoors, which is 8 to 20 times lower than the World Health Organisation's recommendations. Network operators share these standards, regardless of the number of antennas in the area.
Antennas are also strictly controlled. Through the Brussels Electromagnetic Authorisation and Monitoring System (BEAMS), Brussels residents will be able to see what the situation is near their own homes and what parameters the antennas have to comply with.
Brussels Environment will check the parameters of about 15,000 antennas in the area twice a month. Operators will also have to install Power Control on their dynamic antenna, software that automatically limits the waves when demand is too high.
