After winning gold in the 1,500 metres on Saturday, short-track star Hanne Desmet took silver in the 1,000 metres on Sunday in Montreal, Canada, on the first World Cup weekend of the season. Her younger brother Stijn took silver in the 1,500 metres.
Gilli Kim took an early lead in the 1,500m final. But Desmet managed to overtake Kim with one lap to go to win her first gold medal of the season. The final of the 1,000 metres also ended in a duel between the Belgian and the South Korean. This time Kim took first place in a close finish.
Some of her rivals did not attend the Montreal meeting, such as Dutch 1,000m Olympic champion Suzanne Schulting and South Korean 1,500m Olympic champion Choi Min-Jeong.
Silver for Stijn Desmet
Her younger brother Stijn Desmet also won silver this weekend, finishing second in the men's 1500m behind Olympic champion Hwang Dae-heon. He also reached the quarter-finals of the 1,000 metres.
The Desmet siblings, together with Tineke den Dulk and Adriaan Dewagtere, also won the B final of the mixed relay. The victory put Belgium in 5th place in the final standings.
