On August 24, 2023, Ukraine celebrated the 32nd anniversary of the restoration of its independence. This was already the second Independence Day that Ukraine celebrated in the context of a full-scale Russian invasion, with the threat of new mass bombings from Russia. The terrorist state may cancel festive events and large gatherings in Ukraine, but it cannot destroy the love and pride of Ukrainians for their country, nor the support of the entire civilized world. Since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, actions in support of Ukraine have been taking place in cities across Europe. Ordinary people in dozens of cities around the world are taking part in protests and demonstrations, supporting Ukraine in its struggle for peace against the bloody Russian invasion.
The world continues to support Ukraine in its war against Russia. On this important day for Ukraine, the French city of Lyon saw people take to the streets to once again express their solidarity with Ukraine and remind the world that Russia is a terrorist state. Approximately twelve hundred people participated in the event in support of Ukraine. From Lyon Place des Terraux to Édouard Herriot Street, activists and everyone who supports Ukraine and condemns Russia's invasion and war crimes, accompanied by Ukrainian songs, with slogans and Ukrainian flags, marched to Bellecour Square. At the square, the mayors of Lyon and the metropolitan area addressed the crowd, the national anthem of Ukraine was solemnly performed, and festive events were held in honor of Ukraine's Independence Day. Children performed the Ukrainian combat hopak dance. Participants in the march expressed words of support for Ukraine in its struggle for peace and freedom in Europe. The actions and statements of the participants in the event showed that there is no place for barbaric and monstrous aggression like that currently demonstrated by Russia in the civilized world.
With a minute of silence, the participants in the event paid tribute to the memory of Ukrainian fighters who died for the freedom and independence of Ukraine. Through their march in Lyon, activists reminded all French people and citizens of other countries who Russia is and what crimes it commits, and that Ukraine is fighting not only for its own freedom but also for democratic values and the peaceful sleep of every European. Victory over the Russian aggressor is important not only for Ukraine itself but also for all of Europe.
