Memorial Van Damme: Ingebrigtsen breaks 2000m world record

Norway's Jakob Ingebrigtsen broke the 24-year-old world record in the 2000m at the Memorial Van Damme Diamond League meeting in Brussels on Friday night.

The reigning Olympic 1500m and world 5000m champion clocked 4:43.13 for the non-traditional distance of 2000m. He beat the previous world record of 4:44.79 set by Morocco's Hicham El Guerrouj in Berlin in 1999.

Reynold Kipkorir Cheruiyot of Kenya was second and Australia's Stewart McSweyn was third. Belgium's Ruben Verheyden finished ninth in 4:52.37, taking the Belgian record from Christophe Impens (4:56.10), who set it in 1996.

In June, Ingebrigtsen also broke the 2 mile world record. His time of 7:54.10 was almost five seconds faster than the previous world record (7:58.61) set by Daniel Komen in 1997.
