In one year, 223,000 diesel cars have disappeared from Belgium's roads, while the number of electric vehicles has nearly doubled. This is shown in statistics provided by Statbel on Wednesday.
On 1 August, Belgium had 6,030,700 registered passenger cars, 1.4 per cent more than a year earlier and 9.8 per cent more than 10 years ago.
While the number of diesel cars has been declining for years, the number of petrol cars is still increasing. On 1 August, 2,201,549 diesel cars were registered (down 9.2 per cent on the previous year) against 3,096,253 petrol cars (up 2.5 per cent).
Although their impact is still relatively limited, the number of electric and hybrid cars is also increasing significantly. There were 537,817 hybrid cars registered on 1 August, an increase of 43.4 per cent in a year. The number of electric vehicles rose by 93.6 per cent to 138,749 units.
Statbel notes that 80.8 per cent of electric automobiles are registered as company cars, while only 26,440 are registered by private individuals. Commercial vehicles are also in the majority among hybrid cars, but less pronounced: 58.3 per cent are registered in the name of a company.
