Royal Antwerp FC secure first-ever Champions League qualification

Royal Antwerp FC qualified for the Champions League group stage on Wednesday night in the second leg of their final qualifying round tie against AEK Athens. The victory secured Belgium's oldest club a place in the group stage for the first time in their history.

Antwerp beat the Greek side 2-1 in Athens, giving them a 3-1 win over the two legs. "We are going to play in the Champions League. The realisation is still not quite sinking in, but it really is true," said Antwerp's technical director, Mark Overmars. "I would never have thought this a year ago. So much has happened in the last year. We have had a fantastic season."

The draw for the Champions League group stage will take place in Monaco on Thursday at 18.00. With Antwerp in Pot Four, they are likely to face three very tough opponents.
