Thirty-eight Belgian companies at world's biggest game fair, Flemish PM set to visit

Gamescom, the world's largest games fair, opened its doors in Cologne on Wednesday. Thirty-eight Belgian companies are present at the event. Flemish minister-president Jan Jambon is expected to visit the Belgian pavilion at Gamescom on Wednesday.

At this year's Gamescom, 1,227 exhibitors will present their new games, hardware or other products. Among them are industry giants Nintendo, Ubisoft and Tencent.

Thirty-eight Belgian companies are also represented in Cologne. The fast-growing Belgian games industry has set up a pavilion at Gamescon with the support of the country's regional investment agencies (FIT for Flanders, Awex for Wallonia and hub.brussels for the Brussels-Capital region) and the Flemish Audiovisual Fund (VAF). Flemish government leader Jan Jambon is set to visit the pavilion on Wednesday.

Growing industry

Belgium's computer games industry has seen significant growth in recent years, with the number of companies increasing by more than a fifth year-on-year to 133 in 2022. Most recently, at the beginning of August, 'Baldur's Gate 3' by Ghent-based Larian Studios became the world's best-selling computer game.

On Wednesday, Gamescom will only be open to computer game industry professionals and journalists. On Thursday, the fair opens its doors to the general public. Gamescom will be held in the German city until Sunday.
